My idea was to change timeout, to a place of remembrance. It
may look the same as a timeout spot, but the concept is vastly different as I
see from a new perspective.
My idea involves a chair, which is not a seat of punishment,
but rather a royal seat to remind them they are a child of God.
Children (and adults) are NOT sent there because they are ‘naughty’
but rather to remember WHO THEY ARE!
Statements like, I AM KIND, I AM LOVING, I AM HELPFUL, I
MAKE GOOD CHOICES, I AM FRIENDLY, I AM FORGIVING surround the place of remembrance
and REMIND us WHO we ARE (pictures may be helpful for young children).
Children do not need to be told they are naughty. They must
be reminded of who they truly are. We are created in God’s image. We are not
naughty. We are not ‘ratbags’. We must choose our words carefully.
Do you behave your best when people remind you of your worst
behaviour? I surely don’t. I behave the best when I am loved, accepted and I
remember who I am according to my loving Daddy.
As parents, let’s choose to speak LIFE over our children.
Let us remind them daily WHO they are and shower them with love. When they
forget who they are and behave in a way that is not OK, send them to the place
of remembrance where they can be reminded of WHO God made them to be.
Feel free to use this idea and modify it to suit your
family.
Let’s move from punishment to empowerment in the way we raise
our children.
